  1. humble: adjective: 1. not proud; modest 2. simple; not fancy. The humble artist refused to take large sums of money for his beautiful paintings. He lived simply in a humble studio outside the city.
  2. friction: noun: disagreement between people or groups of people. There was friction between the two teams when a wild pitch injured the batter.
  3. loathe: verb: to dislike greatly. antonym: adore. I loathe running around the track after it rains, because I always get covered with mud.
  4. sincere: adjective: genuine; true. Cory's sincere apology made me feel better because I could tell he was truly sorry.

  1. urge: verb: to speak or argue strongly in favor of. noun: a strong desire.  The basketball coach had to urge her star player to control the urge to take wild shots.
  2. tactful: adjective: thoughtful and sensitive in dealing with others. the tactful waiter quickly and quietly removed the glass of water with a fly in it.
  3. belfry: noun: a tower where bells are hung. The bell ringer climbed the winding staircase to the belfry every evening at 5:00 to ring the hour.
  4. critique: verb: to give an opinion of teh positive and negative points of something. Before I write my final story draft, I will ask some classmates to critique my rough draft to get ideas for ways to improve the plot.

Vocabulary

  1. muse: verb: to think deeply.  My mother had to muse for a while before deciding to let me have a slumber party. Synonyms: consider, ponder, reflect on.
  2. paraphrase: verb: to use otyher words to explain something. The teacher asked us to paraphrase the story in fifty words or less.
  3. vulnerable: adjective: capable of being harmed or injured. Without its mother, the baby bird was vulnerable on the ground.
  4. tariff: noun: a tax paid on products that are imported or exported.  On December 16, 1773, 150 American colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians dumped 342 crates of tea into Boston Harbor to protest a British tariff on tea.

  3. dominate: verb: to rule or control by strength or power. The king used his soldiers to help him dominate the kingdom.
  4. invincible: adjective: not able to be defeated. With five victories and no defeats, our team has been invincible this season.

  1. rustic: adjective: having to do with the countryside, not the city.  The rustic cabin looked out of place in the suburban neighborhood.
  2. lapse: noun: 1. a small mistake or failure. 2. the passing of time. Forgive my lapse of good table manners, but it's been a two-year lapse since I've eaten in a fancy restaurant.
  3. correspond: verb: 1. to communicate in writing. 2. to match in some way. When you correspond with someone in Japan, you have to write the Japanese pictographs that correspond to that person's address.
  4. coy: adjective: shy or bashful. The coy child hid behind her mother when a stranger came to the door.

  2. navigate: verb: to steer or direct the course of a ship or an aircraft. To navigate a ship in heavy for is difficult because you can't see where the ship is headed.
  3. kindling: noun: dried twigs or small pieces of wood used to start a fire.  The boys had to search the ground for kindling before they could build a campfire.
  4. domestic: adjective: 1. related to the home or family. 2. tame; not wild. Although I enjoy most domestic activities, I hate cleaning up after our domestic ferret.

  3. appease: verb: to make calmer by giving in to demands. synonym: satisfy. The band came back on stage and played another song to appease its screaming fans.
  4. partial: adjective: 1. not complete 2. unfair favor to one side. My teacher will not accept partial homework assignments, even from the students she seems to be partial to.
