Vocabulary

  1. muse: verb: to think deeply.  My mother had to muse for a while before deciding to let me have a slumber party. Synonyms: consider, ponder, reflect on.
  2. paraphrase: verb: to use otyher words to explain something. The teacher asked us to paraphrase the story in fifty words or less.
  3. vulnerable: adjective: capable of being harmed or injured. Without its mother, the baby bird was vulnerable on the ground.
  4. tariff: noun: a tax paid on products that are imported or exported.  On December 16, 1773, 150 American colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians dumped 342 crates of tea into Boston Harbor to protest a British tariff on tea.

  1. ancestor: noun: a member of your family who lived a long time ago, even before your grandparents. I have an ancestor who fought in the American Civil War.
  2. dimension: noun: a measurement of length, width, or thickness. We need to figure out the room's dimensions so we can buy the right amount of paint.
  3. dominate: verb: to rule or control by strength or power. The king used his soldiers to help him dominate the kingdom.
  4. invincible: adjective: not able to be defeated. With five victories and no defeats, our team has been invincible this season.

  1. rustic: adjective: having to do with the countryside, not the city.  The rustic cabin looked out of place in the suburban neighborhood.
  2. lapse: noun: 1. a small mistake or failure. 2. the passing of time. Forgive my lapse of good table manners, but it's been a two-year lapse since I've eaten in a fancy restaurant.
  3. correspond: verb: 1. to communicate in writing. 2. to match in some way. When you correspond with someone in Japan, you have to write the Japanese pictographs that correspond to that person's address.
  4. coy: adjective: shy or bashful. The coy child hid behind her mother when a stranger came to the door.
